Chord/scale relationship in the same position?

by Jeff Hinks
(Kitchener Ontario Canada)

Question Hi! Thanks for the opportunity to ask this question. I understand that I may take notes from the scale that compliments the chord I'm playing over. But you emphasize that they must be in the same position. Is that correct, or are you just suggesting that the root note from which I will begin my solo come from the same position? i.e. Could I not begin with a 5th fret barred A scale form over a traditional first position A?

Answer

Just to clarify, you don't have to draw the scale pattern from around the chord position you're playing. In the chord scale relationships lesson, I merely state that this is the easiest starting point to identify when working out your solo.

So, once you've established that starting root position, around the chord form you've chosen, you can then use your knowledge of building larger scale patterns to move across more of the fretboard.
